In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Cycle

IVF is one of the most effective fertility treatments available. It involves inseminating eggs with sperm outside the body, then transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus to attempt conception. Connect IVF offers individualised evidence-based IVF care supported by gold-standard laboratory techniques and protocols.

In Vitro Fertilisation is a multi-step fertility treatment offered by Connect IVF. The steps involved include:

  • Controlled ovarian stimulation - usually 8-12 days of medication, and monitoring of response with hormone blood tests and transvaginal ultrasounds
  • Oocyte pick up (OPU) procedure – transvaginal egg retrieval procedure performed under anaesthesia to collect eggs directly from the ovaries
  • Insemination - exposure of eggs collected to laboratory prepared sperm where fertilisation can occur
  • Embryo culture - any fertilised eggs will be cultured/grown in the laboratory for up to six days
  • Embryo transfer (ET) - procedure to place an embryo directly into the uterine cavity (not usually performed under anaesthesia)
  • Embryo cryo-preservation – vitrification (freezing) of any suitable remaining embryos for future use

Who can benefit from In Vitro Fertilisation?

  • Those with more defined fertility factors affecting chance of conception
  • Those with non-patent fallopian tubes (obstructed fallopian tubes that do not allow passage of the egg through the fallopian tube after ovulation)
  • Those that have attempted other first-line fertility treatments without success
  • Those that do not have the reproductive time to attempt first-line fertility treatments first (usually those over 35 years of age)
