Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) Cycle

ICSI is a highly specialised form of insemination offered at Connect IVF. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is used in conjunction with a standard In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment cycle to overcome certain fertility difficulties, particularly male fertility factors.

What is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a laboratory insemination technique where a single sperm is carefully selected and injected directly into the cytoplasm (area inside) of a mature egg. In cases where the sperm may have difficulty penetrating the egg naturally, this precise technique increases the chances of successful fertilisation by ensuring the egg and sperm are able to meet. ICSI does not force fertilisation, the egg and sperm still need to achieve this autonomously. ICSI is not a treatment cycle, rather an insemination technique used within an IVF cycle to increase the chance of fertilisation in those that are known to or expected to have poor outcomes with standard IVF insemination.

Who can benefit from Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection?

  • Those with poor sperm parameters such as: very low sperm concentration (oligospermia), poor movement (motility) or abnormal appearance (morphology)
  • Those with  failed or low fertilisation outcomes using IVF insemination in previous cycles
  • Those in which sperm has been retrieved through surgical methods
  • Those that have had previous failed cycles where sperm binding or sperm penetration of the egg was the suspected cause of the poor outcome
