Surgical Sperm Retrieval (SSR) at Connect IVF offers people with absent or dysfunctional sperm a pathway to biological parenthood. This advanced procedure involves collecting sperm directly from the testicles when it is not present in the ejaculate or the ejaculated sperm is inadequate for clinical use.
What is Surgical Sperm Retrieval (SSR)?
Surgical Sperm Retrieval is a term used for procedures performed to obtain sperm directly from the testis in cases where ejaculation is not possible or effective. The procedure is performed by experienced fertility specialists under unconscious anaesthetic sedation. The procedure most performed is Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA), where a small needle is used to aspirate seminiferous tubules (sperm producing structures) directly from the testis. After collection these tubules are dissected and processed in the laboratory and assessed for the presence of mature, motile and/or viable sperm that could be used for insemination or cryo-preservation (for future clinical use).
